The ketosis diet – ketosis being the practice of burning fats up – resembles the Atkins diet in many ways. The most obvious are its name: ketosis. This diet is very efficient at burning fat, especially in a short time period. The ketones created in this process are extremely efficient in reducing carbohydrate intake and melting stored fat stores. It’s even been shown to be remarkably effective in reversing the loss of muscle mass that occurs with a low carbohydrate diet.
The ketosis diet has been in practice for years, although the Atkins and Low Carb diets are relatively new. The ketosis diet is now a frequent side effect of certain anti-anxiety medications. In a study published by the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, researchers report that taking the ketones EnerZ and Zeaxanthin (a very concentrated form of beta-carotene) as a supplement to relieve pre-existing anxiety caused severe dehydration. This was only found when the patients taking supplements were given large doses; the results were therefore pre-menopausal girls taking the supplements for menopausal symptoms, not necessarily obese individuals or those with a medical condition that would normally prevent them from carrying such an expensive supplement.
Another similarity with the Atkins and low carb diet is that both diets result in burning fats for energy, resulting in weight loss. In a study published in the journal Science by the National Institute on Deception, it was shown that a ketosis diet resulted in significantly less hassle pain compared to a low fat diet (the study was placebo-controlled). This might seem like a minor result, but it shows just how far the diet may go to reducing an individual’s daily pain-related expenses. As the cost for calories increases, people are naturally looking for more effective means of burning off those calories without expending extra effort.
The main difference between an Atkins and a keto diet, however, is the amount of time and effort required to maintain the regime. Atkins has been compared to the Atkins Diet as a sort of short term diet experience, whereby you lose weight very fast because your body doesn’t have to change its carbohydrate intake drastically. With the Atkins diet, you might expect to lose around 15% of your body weight in a relatively short period. On the other hand, ketosis diets require much longer periods of time to reach normal weight loss. These long-term effects, however, are often considered desirable because they delay the inevitable boredom of following a diet for several months.
Unlike the Atkins diet, ketosis diet burns fat rather than glucose, leading to significant weight loss over time. And unlike most low carb diets, there isn’t any question as to whether one should continue on these types of diets. The concept behind the Atkins plan is that, by restricting carbohydrates, you can force your body into a state of thermogenesis, or rapid metabolic rate. As soon as your body starts to go into this state, it becomes more efficient at burning carbohydrates for fuel. Because of this, you lose weight better and more quickly.
So, why is it that people go on these diets? Well, there are lots of different theories behind the thought that ketosis diets produce ketones. Proponents of the low carb diet plans believe that ketones are produced when the brain tells your body to break down stored fat. Proponents of the Atkins plan, meanwhile, believe that ketones are produced when your body goes into a state like the hibernation seen in bears. They also think that ketones are produced during periods of fasting. Either way, the Atkins high fat diet produces ketones.
In brief, your body is able to sustain itself on a high fat diet with limited carbohydrates, but can’t produce ketones, which are short-chain fatty acids. Based on this information, it looks like the low glycemic index diet may not be suitable for people who are insulin resistant or suffering from diabetes. However, the diet has been proven to be very effective for weight loss in people with normal glucose levels.
Now, back to the first question: Is the Atkins diet, the best way to lose weight? Well, like anything else in life, you will get what you pay for. It’s easy to look great on paper and have nice abs when in reality, you lack basic nutrition and exercise. The reason you need to drop weight is because you’ve got too much fat intake, which is contributing to excessive cholesterol in your arteries. Additionally, you have a history of cardiovascular disease, high cholesterol and high fat consumption, all of which are risk factors for cardiovascular disease and stroke.
